Nanaimo and the West Coast of Vancouver Island is home to some of the most amazing paddling in the world.
You can paddle among tree-covered islands, in secluded bays and coves, or along rugged coastlines. Experience paddling with friends who enjoy getting out for fun on their canoes and kayaks in our super natural marine playground - go to the join page and join today. BEFORE YOU JOIN, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT FOR THE TYPE OF PADDLING WE MOSTLY DO. Nanaimo Paddlers does not provide equipment, so you will need your own kayak, paddle and other equipment described in Guidelines. If you do not have equipment and are not sure what to purchase, there are several stores in Nanaimo that sell kayaking equipment. In order to paddle in ocean waters you will require a seaworthy, ocean going kayak with watertight bulkheads or flotation, with a spray skirt to keep the cockpit from swamping, and proper deck lines for rescue purposes. We recommend that you purchase a kayak no shorter than 14 feet for stability and the ability to keep up with the group. Sit on top kayaks, some inflatable kayaks and some foldable kayaks are not suitable for ocean travel around Vancouver Island. If you are not sure if your kayak meets the requirements for safe ocean going travel, contact our Membership Chair at [email protected] |
