Nanaimo Paddlers welcomes all levels of paddlers.
Please use the "Take Self-Assessment" button above to assess your current skills. Your answers and self-assessment will be available to club hosts who plan the paddle events and you can see what is on file for you with the "Get Your Latest Assessment" button.
To see the skills and proficiency levels used by Nanaimo Paddlers see the Self-Assessment Rubric (PDF), it provides an overview and description of the various skills that make up the different proficiency levels and will help to determine your path forward when developing and improving your kayaking skills.
If you don’t have the skills you desire yet, see our TRAINING page to see current club offered skill development opportunities and the RESOURCES page to find various regional resources of where to obtain everything from the basic skills that are required before you will be permitted to join us on a paddle to more advanced skills and certifications.
Every club member is responsible for their own safety on and off the water. Our paddle events have a description of conditions you will likely find on that paddle, for example, the length of the trip, length of any open-water crossings, expected wind speeds and sea conditions, any currents or other conditions, paddling speed or other skills that may be required, and any special equipment. You will be able to use your self-assessment to sign up for trips that meet but do not exceed your paddling abilities, resulting in a safe and enjoyable outing for everyone! If you feel the paddle might be at the edge of your abilities feel free to contact the host to discuss.
